Lake Las Vegas in eastern Henderson, about 17 miles east of the Las Vegas Strip
Lake Las Vegas is a 320 acre lake that was built into the desert in eastern Henderson, starting in 1990. It sits about 17 miles east of the Strip, which is roughly thirty minutes of driving, and the water is the whole point. Nothing else within half an hour of Las Vegas looks like this.
Most of what you see on this page happened at the village on the north shore, where the buildings are done in a Mediterranean style: ochre and red stucco, cobblestone streets, clipped hedges, cypress trees, a courtyard fountain, and boat docks right at the edge of the water. A replica of Florence’s Ponte Vecchio bridge crosses the lake behind it, which is the backdrop in a lot of these photos.
I’m McKenzie, and two couples are on this page. One of them came here for a short session right after he proposed, still laughing about what had just happened. The other brought two outfits and we spent an evening walking from the gardens down to the docks. Both sessions are in the gallery above, start to finish.
Why couples pick the lake for engagement photos
Water changes the light, and that is the practical reason to drive out here. The lake throws a soft bounce back up at your faces, so late afternoon at the shoreline is kind in a way that open desert never is at the same hour. In the valley I spend a lot of a session hunting for shade. Out here the water and the buildings hand me most of it.
The second reason is that you get several completely different backdrops inside one short walk. A hedged garden path with string lights over it. A stone fountain in a shaded courtyard. A row of arches looking out over the water. A shoreline path with the village and the bridge behind you. Then the docks, with the boats moored on both sides. All of that is in the gallery above, and all of it is a few minutes apart on foot.
It also does not read as Las Vegas, and for a lot of couples that matters. If your family is going to see these photos on a save the date, and you would rather they not see a casino in the background, this is the answer that is still close to town. The other close answer is red rock instead of water, and that one has its own page: Red Rock Canyon engagement photos.
Almost everybody tells me they are awkward in front of a camera before we start. I am too. You get prompts instead of poses, and about ten minutes in you stop thinking about me. Tell me what you’re planning and I’ll walk you through what an evening out there looks like.
What to plan for a Lake Las Vegas session
Getting the session approved
The village is private property with public access, so this is the one thing to sort out before your date. Lake Las Vegas publishes a photography policy that says posed photography by anyone acting as a photographer for compensation has to be approved by village management before the shoot. In the version posted in 2021 the fee was a flat $50 for a session of up to about two hours, with longer shoots possibly needing a separate agreement and insurance. Fees move, so treat that number as a ballpark and check the current policy or the village contact page for what applies to your date.
None of that applies to you taking pictures of each other on your phone. The policy is about photographers working for pay, and getting the approval is on my list, not yours.
Parking and how far you walk
You park once, in the garage at the village, and then everything happens on foot. The gardens, the fountain, the arches, the shore path, and the docks are all a few minutes apart. That is unusual for a Las Vegas location. Red Rock and Mount Charleston both mean driving between pullouts in the middle of a session, and this one does not.
It also means you can finish and go straight to dinner, because the restaurants are right there in the village. That is an easy way to end a proposal, and it is one of the reasons couples pick this spot for one.
Heat, wind, and the season
Summer afternoons out here are still summer afternoons in the Mojave. July and August sessions get scheduled for the last hour or two of daylight, full stop. From October through April the middle of the day is comfortable and the light off the water is beautiful for most of the afternoon.
Wind is the one thing the lake adds that the desert does not, and it comes up across open water in the late afternoon in spring. It is usually good for photos. Hair moves, dresses move, and none of it looks staged. It is worth knowing about if you were planning on a hairstyle that has to stay put.
The best time of day for photos at Lake Las Vegas
The hour before sunset, on the water side. The village faces the lake, so the sun goes down behind the hills to the west and the buildings across the water turn warm and gold while you are standing on the dock. That is when the photos at the bottom of the gallery were taken.
If you want the courtyard and the garden paths too, come earlier and start there while they are still in shade, then work your way down to the water as the light goes. That is the order both of these sessions ran in, and it is the order I would put you in. Plan on about two hours to do the whole walk without rushing.
Weekends bring more people to the village, especially when there is an event on. Weekday evenings are quieter, and quieter means I can put you in the middle of a cobblestone street without waiting for it to clear.
Let’s plan yours
If Lake Las Vegas is the one, send me a message and tell me what you have in mind. I’ll get the village approval handled, tell you what time to be there for the light you want, and bring you the engagement session part of this without any of the stress. If you have not asked yet and you are working on that first, start with the proposals page, or take a look at Bellagio engagement photos if you want something closer to the Strip.
You do not have to know how to pose. That part is on me.
Questions
Good to know
Do you need permission to take photos at Lake Las Vegas?
For a paid photographer, yes. The village is private property that the public is welcome to walk around, and its published photography policy says posed sessions by anyone shooting for compensation have to be approved by village management before the date. Snapshots of your own friends and family are fine without any of that. The approval is my job, not yours, and it has to be arranged ahead of time rather than on the day.
How far is Lake Las Vegas from the Las Vegas Strip?
About 17 miles east, in Henderson, which is usually around thirty minutes of driving. You take the 215 around the south end of the valley and then Lake Mead Parkway out toward the water.
Where do you park for engagement photos at Lake Las Vegas?
There is a parking garage right at the village, and everything on this page is within a short walk of it. The gardens, the fountain courtyard, the shoreline path, and the boat docks are all a few minutes apart on foot, so nobody is driving between spots in the middle of a session.
What should we wear for a session at the lake?
Something you can walk in. The village streets are cobblestone and the docks move a little underfoot, so thin heels fight you the whole way. Both couples on this page wore summer clothes, one of them brought a second outfit, and one of them ended up carrying her shoes down the dock, which turned into a photo I love.
Is Lake Las Vegas a good place to propose?
It is one of my favorites, because the village gives you somewhere to go afterward. One of the sessions on this page happened right after he proposed, and you can see it on their faces. I photograph proposals here and I am good at keeping the secret, so your plan stays your plan.
